TINSUKIA: In a significant operation, security forces recovered around 30kg of explosives from the Digboi Reserve Forest in Assam's Tinsukia district.
The explosives were unearthed during a joint operation carried out by Tinsukia police and the Indian Army. According to police sources, the explosives were buried nearly a year ago by Nabajit Asom, a recently surrendered cadre of the banned outfit ULFA-I.
Officials said the explosives were concealed about 500 meters from the Dibru River and were found hidden in eight polythene bags, a tiffin box, and a bucket. Security forces have launched a search operation in the area, suspecting the presence of more hidden stockpiles.
The operation comes after Tinsukia Police apprehended two active members of the United Liberation Front of Asom–Independent (ULFA-I) and recovered illegal weapons from their possession on February 28. The apprehended militants were identified as Nabajit Asom from Bolaguri in Kumthai, Golaghat, and Nitul Asom from Meleng Lohkor village in Teok. The joint operation was conducted by Assam Police, Military Intelligence, and Assam Rifles.
Meanwhile, earlier this year, on January 25, security forces uncovered a concealed stash of explosives in a forested region of Sonitpur district, Assam. Authorities had ramped up security measures across the state in preparation for the 76th Republic Day celebrations, according to the police. Police discovered a polythene bag containing explosives, including 36 grenades and three detonators, during a search operation.
The Sonitpur Police stated in a post on X, "On 25/1/2025, acting on reliable information about the secret storage of illegal arms and ammunition buried underground in the jungle area near Khwbra village, Batashipur under Dhekiajuli Police Station, a search operation was conducted."
