SIVASAGAR: In a proactive move to address erosion and flood risks ahead of the monsoon season, MLA of Amguri Legislative Assembly constituency Pradip Hazarika, accompanied by Sivasagar District Commissioner Aayush Garg, conducted a field inspection of critical areas affected by riverbank erosion and past flooding recently. The inspection team also included the Additional District Commissioner (DDMA), Executive Engineer of the Water Resources Department (WRD) and the Circle Officer of Sivasagar.

The visit commenced at the erosion-affected reach of Rupahimukh, an area that has been facing continuous threats due to riverbank degradation. Observing the extent of damage, DC Aayush Garg instructed WRD officials to undertake immediate palliative measures to mitigate further erosion. Specifically, he ordered the launching of Pre-Stressed Concrete (PSC) porcupines, structural elements used to reduce water velocity and trap silt, to prevent further deterioration of the riverbank.

In addition to erosion control, DC Garg directed the concerned departments to lay Geo Fabric Sheets over severely rain-cut portions of the road-cum-bund in the Rupahimukh area. This protective layering is intended to stabilize the embankment and prevent further weakening of the infrastructure due to water runoff during heavy rains.

Following the inspection at Rupahimukh, the team proceeded to Konwerpur to assess the condition of the Bagharchuk Ring Bund. This section had experienced severe overtopping during last year's floods, posing a significant risk to nearby habitations. Officials confirmed that the bund had since been restored through measures such as raising the height and strengthening the existing structure. The visiting team expressed satisfaction with the completed restoration work.

They also visited the Bagharchuk area to review the progress of the ongoing geobag protection work. Geobags, which are filled with sand or earth, are being used to reinforce the embankment and provide additional resistance against water pressure.

Speaking to officials and field engineers during the visit, DC Garg emphasized the urgency of completing all necessary protective works before the onset of the monsoon. He reiterated the administration's commitment to ensuring the safety of residents in vulnerable areas and instructed departments to maintain constant vigilance and readiness for emergency response.
