GAURISAGAR: The newly-constructed Sivasagar Senior Citizens building was formally inaugurated by Dr Jiten Hazarika, Vice-Chancellor, Dibrugarh University, recently. It may be mentioned here that this modern building has been constructed at a cost of Rs 56 lakh, entirely from the members’ contributions and is the first of its kind in the state. Inaugurating the building, Dr Hazarika highly appreciated the laudable effort of the senior citizens of Sivasagar district for building a magnificent building with their own contribution.
He also stressed that those aged 60 plus are no longer considered old or senior now as today’s definition of old age is 80 plus. He said that the senior citizens contribute in a large measure to the overall growth of the economy and society. Citing health facilities for the seniors, Dr Hazarika said that there are no sophisticated hospitals in Sivasagar, Jorhat, and Golaghat districts, and patients have to be rushed to Dibrugarh at least 60-70 km away at the eleventh hour.
The meeting was chaired by Kartick Dutta, President, Sivasagar Senior Citizens’ Association. Dutta delved at length on the tireless efforts of the committee for owning a plot of land on the Fuleswari Girls HS School Road while Secretary Jogesh Rajkhowa emphasized the unstinted support and services of the members and their generosity that made the project a reality in just 10 years.
