Assam: SMD College Hosts Workshop on Vermicomposting, Waste Management, and Rainwater Harvesting

The Eco Club of Swahid Maniram Dewan (SMD) College, Charing, in Sivasagar district organized a workshop on Vermicomposting, Solid Waste Management and Rainwater Harvesting on February 10.

GAURISAGAR: The Eco Club of Swahid Maniram Dewan (SMD) College, Charing, in Sivasagar district organized a workshop on Vermicomposting, Solid Waste Management and Rainwater Harvesting on February 10 in collaboration with the college IQAC. The programme was organized under the Environmental Education Program (EEP), Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India and implemented by Assam Science Technology and Environment Council.

The event aimed to promote environmental awareness and sustainable practices among students and faculty members. The programme was coordinated by Dr Jayprakash Ray, Coordinator of the Eco Club & IQAC of the college .The workshop was started with lighting of lamp by Dr Bidyananda Borkakoty, Principal of the college. He also delivered the welcome speech where he emphasized the significance of environmental conservation. Dr Jayprakash Ray provided an insightful overview of the objectives behind organizing the workshop. He highlighted the importance of sustainable waste management and water conservation techniques in addressing environmental challenges. The inaugural session was anchored by Mr Ranjit Das, Associate Professor and Head, department of Assamese.

The first technical session focused on introduction to solid waste management, delivered by Dr Rimjim Borah, Assistant Professor & Head, Department of Economics, Gargaon College. Dr Borah conducted both theoretical and practical sessions, covering essential aspects such as the significance of solid waste management in educational institutions, homes, and communities. She elaborated on the various types of waste, challenges in solid waste management, and its environmental impacts. The practical session included hands-on waste segregation exercises, where students actively participated under the guidance of Dr Borah. Additionally, two NSS volunteers from Gargaon College assisted in demonstrating proper waste segregation techniques, enhancing the learning experience for the participants.

The second session was on Rainwater Harvesting, delivered by Bikash Dutta, Assistant Professor, Department of Economics, SMD College. He stressed on the concept of rainwater harvesting (RWH), types of RWH, and components of a basic RWH system. The third session covered Vermicomposting and the lecture was delivered by Rumi Borah, Sub Divisional Agriculture Officer (SDAO) , Amguri Agriculture Sub-Division. She discussed the concept of vermicomposting, its benefits, materials required, and the process of setting up a vermicomposting unit at home or college. The practical session was led by Sanjib Gogoi, a young and progressive vermicompost farmer of Charing area, who provided hands-on training to the participants on setting up a vermicomposting unit.

More than seventy teachers and students from various institutions, including DC Gogoi Jakaichuk HS School, Charing, Silpukhuri High School, Hatighuli, Gaurisagar HS Industrial Institute, Namdang Gohain Gaon MV School, RKP High School, Charing SDP High School, Deoraja People’s HS School, Khanamukh Middle School, Charing MV School, and Hafaluting High School, attended the workshop. In the workshop, Rana Neog, Vice-Principal, Dr Rabi Kr. Jha, Associate Professor, Department of English, Srimanta Baruah, Head of the Department of Mathematics, along with faculty members, staff, and students of SMD College, Charing, were present. Certificates were distributed to all participants, and the event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Mr Ranjit Das. The workshop provided a valuable platform for students to gain practical knowledge and awareness regarding sustainable environmental practices. The organizers expressed gratitude to all participants and resource persons for their valuable contributions. The Eco Club of SMD College reiterated its commitment to promoting environmental sustainability through such educational initiatives.
