Assam: SMD College in Sivasagar district organizes International Women’s Day

GAURISAGAR: Swahid Maniram Dewan (SMD) College, Charing, in Sivasagar district celebrated International Women’s Day on March 8 with great enthusiasm. The day was organized by the Women’s Studies Cell in collaboration with the IQAC and NSS Unit of the college. On this occasion, a meeting was held, hosted by Bornalee Bhuyan, Convenor of the Women’s Studies Cell & Assistant Professor, Department of Philosophy, SMD College.

The programme was inaugurated by Dr Bidyananda Borkakoty, Principal of the College. In his inaugural speech, he highlighted the progress of women in society. He emphasized that empowering women should start at home by fostering equality, respect, and opportunities within our own families and in society. He also urged upon everyone to take responsibility in making women more efficient and self-reliant.

Noted educationist and social reformer Monika Saikia graced the function as a resource person. Addressing the gathering, she emphasized the urgent need to combat harassment and injustice against women, urging collective efforts toward women’s empowerment. She stated that women’s progress cannot be achieved merely by celebrating Women’s Day but continuous efforts were needed to ensure their development and well-being.

In the meeting, student Momi Baruah delivered a speech on the importance of International Women’s Day, highlighting the significance of gender equality and women’s rights. Eminent educationist Tuaram Khanikor stressed the importance of women’s education in building a progressive society. Besides, Binita Saikia Dey, a member of the Assam State Commission for Women, delved at length about the challenges faced by women.
