LAKHIMPUR: The Assam State Outsource Power Workers’ Union (ASOPWU) have demanded the Government of Assam to regularize the jobs of the temporary outsourced power workers at the earliest.The organization has strongly opposed any new recruitment in the Power Department without regularizing the jobs of the thousands of temporary outsourced power workers.
Notably, the ASOPWU is a united organization of all outsourced workers in the power sector of the State. Regarding the demand and the stand, the North Lakhimpur Circle Committee of the ASOPWU convened a press conference at North Lakhimpur Press Club on Tuesday in the presence of the Central Committee vice-president Krishna Sarmah, Education and Cultural secretary Putul Baruah. Addressing the media persons, ASOPWU North Lakhimpur Circle Committee president Sunil Phukan, secretary Hemanta Saikia said, “The Government of Assam and the Power Department initiated no positive steps to regularize the jobs of temporary power workers despite submitting consecutive prayers and petitions, staging stir and holding several rounds of talk with the Chief Minister and Power Minister. The serial agitation on the part of the ASOPWU in support of the demand could not even move the Power Department”.
The president and the secretary of the ASOPWU North Lakhimpur Circle Committee further added that the Government of Assam and the Power Department had already decided to recruit as many as 2500 new employees in the department concerned without regularizing the jobs of temporary thousands of outsourced power workers working in the APDCL, AEGCL and APGCL despite repeated requests from the ASOPWU. “If the Government of Assam executes the decision by depriving of the current temporary workers, the ASOPWU will agitate the power sector of the State by initiating extensive stir in the upcoming days,” the dignitaries of the organization declared in the press conference. They demanded Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma to review the decision and fulfill the long standing demand made by the outsourced power workers.
