GUWAHATI: Assam’s taekwondo athletes delivered a stellar performance at the 12th Speed Power International Taekwondo Championship 2025, held at Titiwangsa Stadium, Kuala Lumpur, from February 7 to 9. The team secured a total of five medals—three silver and two bronze—demonstrating their prowess on the international stage.
Violina Molia and Noim Uddin Laskar from Cotton University, along with Teena Sonowal from Handique Girls’ College, won silver medals for their impressive performances. Shrijoni Das from Handique Girls’ College and Manisha Hazarika from Cotton University earned bronze medals, adding to Assam’s success in the sport. Coach Ambrose Bora played a key role in their achievements by providing valuable training and guidance.
Meanwhile, earlier last week, Benla Kemprai, an 18-year-old student from Tularam Raji, Haflong, had made her district and state proud by winning a bronze medal at the 38th National Games in Uttarakhand. The daughter of Ramendra and Enola Kemprai, Benla had become the youngest member of the Assam Taekwondo Team and had made history with her remarkable performance.
Though she had lost to Arunachal Pradesh in the semi-final of the Taekwondo Group Poomsae Team event, she had appealed for a medal and had been awarded a bronze for her efforts. Benla and her team had been preparing for the National Games for the past three months in Puducherry, training under the supervision of Anuj K. Hagjer, the coach and general secretary of the Dima Hasao Taekwondo Association.
She had also received guidance from Biva Bhusan Chakrabarty, an international referee in Taekwondo Poomsae, and Harsha Singha, an international athlete representing Team India.
