TINSUKIA: Hundreds of tea garden workers surrounded Baghjan Police Station in Tinsukia on Thursday, demanding action after a road accident killed an 8-year-old child and critically injured a 7-year-old.

The incident occurred at around 9:30 pm on Wednesday at Baghjan tea estate, where a truck hit two children. One child died on the spot, while the other was taken to Tinsukia Civil Hospital for emergency care. Police officials promised the protesters a full investigation.

“We have filed a case against the driver under the Motor Vehicles Act and BNS. The truck is seized, and the driver is in custody. We are investigating all aspects of the incident,” a police official said.

Meanwhile, earlier last week, a massive protest broke out on National Highway 27 in Jalukbari, Guwahati following a tragic road accident. The accident, involving a school bus, had claimed the life of Prafulla Das, a local man, and injured three students.

Outraged by the incident, hundreds of local residents took to the streets, blocked the highway, and demanded accountability for the accident. They also expressed their frustration with the administration and traffic police, blaming them for failing to ensure road safety.

The protest caused a massive traffic jam on the highway, making it hard for people to pass through and disrupting transport services. Authorities sent in forces to control the situation and tried to negotiate with the protesters.
