TINSUKIA: In a significant event, tea garden workers across the Brahmaputra Valley of Assam staged a one-hour dharna on Wednesday, demanding the fulfillment of their 11-point charter of demands.
The protest was organized by the Asom Chah Mazdoor Sangha (ACMS) in around 800 registered tea gardens across the valley.
In Tinsukia district, the protest took place at Rungagora Tea Estate, where workers, led by ACMS leaders, voiced their demands, including ₹500 as daily wages, scheduled Tribe (ST) status for the tea garden community, better healthcare facilities, improved education for workers’ children, and control over rising prices of essential commodities.
The tea garden workers emphasized that their demands are long overdue and urged the government to take immediate action to improve their socio-economic conditions.
The protest highlighted the growing discontent among tea plantation workers, who play a crucial role in Assam’s economy. The ACMS has warned that if their demands are not met, they will intensify their agitation in the coming days.
Meanwhile, hundreds of tea workers from the Lepetkata tea estate in Dibrugarh organized a protest under the aegis of the Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha (ACMS), demanding improved wages and living conditions earlier in March.
The workers assembled inside the estate, holding placards and shouting slogans as they demanded a hike in their minimum daily wage from Rs 250 to Rs 500, pointing to the growing cost of living.
