DIBRUGARH: Assam is progressing rapidly with new railway projects and industries. Two Amrit Bharat trains have been launched, and new railway tracks are being built. These changes will improve travel, create jobs, and help Assam become an important economic center in the region.
Two Amrit Bharat trains is expected to improve rail travel between Dibrugarh, Silchar, and New Delhi, making the journey faster and more convenient. This is believed to strengthen Assam’s connectivity with the national capital and other major cities, helping in economic and social development.
Four new railway tracks will be built at the Chicken’s Neck corridor, a key route linking Northeast India to the rest of the country. Also, a new railway line will connect Kokrajhar in Assam with Gelaphu in Bhutan, helping to increase trade and enhance relations between the two countries.
In addition, a locomotive engine repair center will be established in Lumding, enhancing railway maintenance and operational efficiency in the state.
Meanwhile, Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is working to make train travel safer. It is using new technology to improve and maintain its infrastructure. To increase safety and efficiency, NFR has upgraded and replaced signaling systems and other safety equipment in different areas.
In January 2025, NFR installed advanced switch point machines at two locations in the Alipurduar and Rangiya divisions. It also replaced 20 machines at Katihar and 11 at Alipurduar. These upgrades will help prevent derailments and make train travel safer for passengers and goods.
To improve safety, five level crossings in Katihar, Lumding, Rangiya, and Tinsukia divisions now have new electric lifting barriers. Also, 17.712 km of signaling cables have been installed at stations in Rangiya, Lumding, and Alipurduar divisions.
