GUWAHATI: Residents of the Kochutoli area in Guwahati, Assam, detained two individuals suspected to be Bangladeshi nationals who had been working there as laborers.

Reports suggest that residents of the Bargharia area in Sonapur, acting on suspicion, detained two individuals who had been working there as daily wagers for the past few months.

Upon verification, it was discovered that the suspected individuals were Bangladeshi nationals who had entered the area illegally. The individuals were identified as Mohammad Taheel and Mohammad Mannan.

During questioning by the locals, they revealed that they were residents of Sylhet in Bangladesh. The duo also claimed that they had paid Rs. 20,000 to a tout who facilitated their entry into Assam and arranged for their employment.

Locals stated that the duo had been working in the area as daily wage laborers since September of this year. The Bangladeshi nationals were subsequently handed over to the police for further investigation.

Meanwhile, earlier this month, two Bangladeshi nationals identified as Mahabul Haque and Shahina Akhtar were arrested by Assam Police for illegally crossing into India near the international border.

Assam Police personnel had apprehended the individuals during a routine border surveillance operation. After their arrest, both were promptly deported to Bangladesh. The operation was part of ongoing efforts to strengthen border security in the region.

Likewise, a Bangladeshi national was arrested near the Indo-Bangladesh border in Sribhumi district on Sunday and subsequently sent back to Bangladesh, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed. However, the CM did not disclose the exact entry route or sector.

In a statement on X, Sarma had applauded the vigilance along the international border, which had led to the swift action.
