SILCHAR: Mystery still shrouds over the vandalism inside the dialysis unit of the Silchar Medical College and Hospital as the Cachar police arrested two persons allegedly involved in the crime. Cachar SSP Numal Mahatta on Thursday informed the media that after thorough interrogation they had arrested Samiruddin Ansari, a house keeping staff and Alamgir Miyan, a technician of the unit. The dialysis unit is run by Apollo Centre. A Miyan, a resident of Tripura, is associated with this private service provider. Both of them had admitted that they had destroyed 8 machines with iron rods, the SSP claimed.

Mahatta said that they were continuing their investigation on the ‘sabotage’ theory as suspected by Dr Bhaskar Gupta, the Principal of the lone medical college in southern Assam. SSP Numal Mahatta had confirmed that they had already interrogated a number of employees of the SMCH, though the exact reason behind the crime was yet to be ascertained.

Meanwhile Silchar MP Parimal Shuklabaidya, who is also the President of the governing body of the SMCH, had clearly stated that such vandalism, ahead of the proposed visit of a central expert team to inspect the infrastructure and management of the institute, indicated that the racket was desperate to tarnish the image of the SMCH. “No personal vendetta against the Head of the college that leads to tarnishing of the image of the institute will be spared,” Shuklabaidya cautioned.

On Monday midnight, unidentified miscreants ransacked the dialysis unit damaging 8 out of 14 dialysis machines in the SMCH. The manner in which the entire vandalism was done clearly indicated that the miscreants were fully aware of the layout of the floor and interiors of the dialysis unit. Dr Bhaskar Gupta too said that someone inside the institute was behind the crime. He significantly underlined that those who had damaged the machines did not want the no cost no fee dialysis service in the SMCH to run. Dr Gupta’s version clearly indicated a nexus between private diagnostic centres and a coterie of SMCH staff.

However, the damage done by the miscreants failed to dampen the spirit of the workforce of the SMCH as the dialysis unit continued to serve patients uninterrupted.
