Assam: Two Tinsukia women reportedly missing in Mahakumbh Mela stampede

Two female devotees from Upper Assam’s Tinsukia district have been reportedly missing following the Maha Kumbh Mela stampede on second Amrit Snan (holy dip) marked by the pre- dawn crowd rush.

DIGBOI: Two female devotees from Upper Assam’s Tinsukia district have been reportedly missing following the Maha Kumbh Mela stampede on second Amrit Snan (holy dip) marked by the pre- dawn crowd rush.

Among the devotees to attend the world’s largest religious festival, the two missing victims of the stampede were identified as Joshna Deb, a resident of Parbatiya, New Colony Feeder Road, under Tinsukia Police Station and Lila Devi (61 years), a resident of New Market Hanuman Mandir of Borhapjan area under Doomdooma Police Station.

Lila Devi had gone missing at around 5.30 pm on Wednesday from Maha Kumbh pillar serial number 231. Meanwhile Joshna Deb reportedly lost the company of her neighbours on Tuesday and has been missing since then. She was last seen at Sangam Ghat.

“We have been sharing the details of the missing persons immediately upon receipt of such missing information from Tinsukia district with the competent authorities at Prayag in Uttar Pradesh,” said SP Tinsukia.

“District police has been specially alerted to assist the people in all possible aspects and people, including the family members, are requested to inform the police immediately in case members of their family have gone missing in the stampede ,” added the top cop.

“Upon receipt of information about two elderly female devotees from the district who have gone missing, we have been putting our best efforts in liaising with the UP Police,” informed the SP Tinsukia.

The Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 that was expecting around 40 crore people from around the globe had commenced earlier on January 13 and was expected to conclude on February 26. According to latest media updates, at least 30 persons were reported dead and 60 injured in Prayagraj where millions of Hindu devotees had gathered for a ritual bath at the confluence of three sacred rivers.
