DHUBRI: The Assam Police have managed to arrest Shivshankar Prasad, a UCO Bank employee involved in a major embezzlement case at the South Salmara branch in Dhubri. He was arrested on April 6 from Saidpur Rajauli village, Hajipur Block, Vaishali district, Bihar, on charges of embezzling a huge amount of money.
The operation, which was conducted under the supervision of a committed team from the Dhubri police, resulted in the arrest of the financial offender at about 4:30 am, and the police found Rs 10 lakh in cash from his possession. Prasad, who hails from Dhubri, was then taken back to Assam and reached the Dhubri Sadar Police station on April 7 as per orders issued by Superintendent of Police Nabin Singh.
The financial irregularities were exposed when Chiradeep Paul, the branch manager, received complaints from deposit account holders about discrepancies in their deposit balances. An internal review by the bank itself showed that Shivshankar had allegedly siphoned off around Rs 8 lakh from customer deposits without transferring the amounts to their accounts. Another Rs 26 lakh was found missing from the reserves of the bank.
It was the discovery of these discrepancies by Branch Manager Paul that led him to lodge a formal complaint at the Dhubri Sadar police station, and the investigation that followed resulted in the arrest of the culprit. The police are now intent on bringing to the surface the entire extent of embezzlement and recovering the misappropriated amount.
