UDALGURI: The 20th Adivasi Mahasabha, a significant event for the Adivasi community in Assam, is scheduled to take place from February 6 to 9, 2025, in Udalguri.

This four-day gathering, organized by the Central Committee of the All Assam Adivasi Students’ Association (AAASA), will be held at the Borongajuli Tea Estate in Bhergaon, with support from district committees in Udalguri and Sonitpur. The event is expected to attract a large crowd and will focus on addressing important issues affecting the Adivasi community.

The Mahasabha will provide a platform for the community to raise concerns such as the demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, wage increases for tea garden workers, land rights, and other socio-economic challenges.

One of the major demands will be the recognition of Adivasi people as a Scheduled Tribe under the Indian Constitution, which has been a long-standing issue. This recognition is crucial for improving the community’s access to better social, economic, and educational opportunities.

Wages for tea garden workers will also be a central topic. Many Adivasi workers in Assam’s tea estates are advocating for fair wages and improved working conditions. Another important issue to be discussed is land rights, with the community seeking better protection of their ancestral land and security from displacement.

The Mahasabha will be attended by several prominent political figures, including Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Bodoland Territorial Region Chief Pramod Boro, and Assam Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary.
