GOLAGHAT: In an unexpected turn of event, one United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) member has surrendered before the authorities in Assam's Golaghat district. Navajit Asom, aka Mandip Saikia, voluntarily came to the mainstream and surrendered himself before the authorities at the Golaghat Police Station.
Hailing from Morongi village, Saikia had been linked to the banned militant group since 2010. His return with the decision to surrender is regarded as an important move towards peace and tranquility in the area. Saikia was allowed to be reunited with his family after his return, who, along with the villagers, shared their joy and relief about his decision to leave militancy.
This episode highlights the continuous efforts of the government and police to persuade the insurgents to come back into society. The surrender of ULFA cadres like Saikia are all part of larger efforts at engaging in dialogue and creating a peaceful atmosphere in Assam, which was ravaged by insurgency and violence a few decades back.
The government has also emphasized the significance of such surrenders in curbing violence and maintaining security in society. Rehabilitation of the erstwhile militants has been understood as a key component in the region's path towards sustainable peace and development.
Recently, based on some intelligence received from Military Intelligence (Kolkata based), a combined operation by Assam Police, Military Intelligence, and Assam Rifles proved successful in securing the surrender of 2 ULFA (I) armed cadres.
