Assam: ULFA (I) Cadres Surrender After Joint Operation by Assam Police and Military Intelligence

A joint operation was launched by Assam Police, Military Intelligence, and Assam Rifles today and successfully facilitated the surrender of 2 ULFA (I) armed cadres.

MARGHERITA: Based on specific intelligence received from Military Intelligence (Kolkata based), a joint operation was launched by Assam Police, Military Intelligence, and Assam Rifles today and successfully facilitated the surrender of 2 ULFA (I) armed cadres.

The Tinsukia Police has taken into custody the cadres identified as Niku Asom and Nabojit Asom, who escaped from a training camp in Myanmar. According to reports, the two cadres were part of the 779 General Headquarter 1 (GHQ1) in Waktham, Myanmar where Nabojit Asom held the rank of SS Lieutenant, while Niku Asom was a SS Corporal.

The duo was arrested by Tinsukia Police in the Tinkupani Forest Reserve area in Jagun, near the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border and they are currently in police custody and being interrogated. The arrest of the two ULFA (I) cadres is seen as a significant breakthrough in the ongoing efforts to counter insurgency in the region.

SS Lt Nabojit Asom is a resident of Bolaguri, Khumthai under Golaghat district who joined in the year 2010 and got training at Taka Hku Myanmar and SS Cpl Niku Asom is a resident of Meleng Lohkor, Teok under Jorhat district in the year 2020 who joined and got training at 779 Camp, Myanmar.

Police and Army personnel recovered, from the possession of the two ULFA(I) cadres, 1 HK Rifle,1 MQ Rifle,1.32 Pistol, 3 magazines of HK, 3 magazines of MQ, 1 grenade, HK 150 rounds, MK 80 rounds and 5 rounds of pistol.

It may be mention that two more ULFA (I) cadres, identified as Ruben Munda alias Silbash Asom, a resident of Borhulung, Bordumsa, and Arunjoy Borah alias Ujjal Asom of Tekeri village, Pengree under Margherita Police Station, had escaped from the training camp in Myanmar and on February 25 and 27 respectively. Both surrendered and were brought to Margherita Police by Army personnel after which the Tinsukia Police took them in custody.
