TEZPUR: Rohit Nath, a respected figure in Tezpur and a retired Registrar from the Assam Government’s Registration Department, passed away at the age of 87 following a stroke at his residence in Joymati Pathar. His demise cast a shadow of grief across the town.
Born on February 19, 1938, in a village near the present Garukhuti Project area in Sipajhar in Darrang district, Rohit Nath had a distinguished academic and professional career. He completed his matriculation from Sipajhar Higher Secondary School with distinction and went on to earn a graduate degree from the prestigious Cotton College. He began his professional life as an officer in the Life Insurance Corporation of India before successfully qualifying for the Assam Government’s Assistant Registrar examination. Over the years, he served in various districts in the positions of Assistant and Deputy Registrar, eventually retiring as Registrar from the Guwahati head office in 1999.
During his tenure as Deputy Registrar in Tezpur, Nath settled in Joymati Pathar, Tezpur and became deeply engaged in the town’s social, cultural, and religious life. He was the founding President of the Darrangi Kala Kristi Bikash Kendra in Tezpur, bringing together the Darrangi community living in the area. Until his last days, he worked passionately to promote Darrangi culture and heritage.
Nath was also a devout scholar of the Vedas, Upanishads, and various other spiritual texts. His deep knowledge and oratory skills made him a revered speaker at numerous public gatherings. He played a key role in several cultural and religious institutions, including the Shankardev Mandir Management Committee (Chanmari), the Railgate Namghar Committee, and the Joymati Pathar Rongali Bihu Celebration Committee. Rohit Nath is survived by his wife, three daughters including Dr Swapnali Kakoti, a Professor in the English department of Darrang College, and a son, Chinmoy Nath, a senior administrative officer currently serving as the Head of the Examination Control Division at the Assam Administrative Staff College. He also leaves behind his son-in-law, Parag Kumar Kakoti, District Commissioner of Darrang district, and several grandchildren.
