Sribhumi: The Sribhumi District came together on Sunday to honour the heroic sacrifices of the 1971 Indo-Pak War during a grand observance of Vijay Diwas. The event, organized by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in collaboration with the Department of Sports and Youth Welfare, Assam and the Sribhumi District Administration, featured a symbolic Padyatra (march) and a host of activities celebrating the indomitable spirit of the nation.
The event commenced with the flagging off of the 7-kilometer Padyatra at Akbarpur Krishi Vigyan Kendra by the Minister of Sports and Youth Welfare, Nandita Garlosa, and Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, Veterinary, and Public Works, Krishnaendu Pal. The march, which concluded at the Sutarkandi Land Port premises, saw enthusiastic participation from across the region, including students, NCC cadets, volunteers, sports enthusiasts, and citizens from all walks of life.
Prominent dignitaries attending the event included: Mission Ranjan Das,MP ; Kamalakshya Dey Purkayastha, MLA, North Karimganj; Mihir Kanti Shome, MLA, Udharbond ;Deepak Jidung, DDC, Shribhumi and others.
In her address, Minister Nandita Garlosa highlighted the significance of Vijay Diwas, emphasizing the bravery, resilience, and unity of the soldiers who safeguarded India’s sovereignty during the 1971 war. She urged the youth to draw inspiration from their sacrifices and channel the same determination into building a prosperous and united nation.
Underlining the importance of sports and youth welfare in national development, the Minister reiterated the Government’s commitment to providing opportunities for young people to excel in diverse fields. “A fit and healthy youth is the backbone of a prosperous India,” she said, encouraging the young participants to embody the values of discipline, perseverance, and teamwork.
The ceremony also recognized eight Youth Icons for their contributions in various fields, including six from Shribhumi district: Saurabh Dey, Palak Kuri, Abhiram Das, Nishi Ranjan Dey, Sumi Sharma, and Shanwar Hossain Rana. Amarjeet Sinha from Cachar and H. Sangeeta Sinha from Hailakandi were also honoured.
The day concluded with tributes at the Malegarh Sepoy Mutiny Memorial and the Chaman Lal Gupta Memorial, symbolizing respect for past sacrifices and a collective commitment to future progress, stated a press release.
