BOKO: A python was rescued in Chandra village under Nagarbera Riverine Range office of West Kamrup Division today by locals with the supervision of the Village Headman Rupam Boro.
According to Boro, the python’s length was around 10 to 12 ft and weighed around 20 kilograms. It was located by locals when the python tried to enter the village from a nearby hill. Headman Rupam Boro said that they rescued more than 10 pythons from their village in the last three years. However, he alleged that the West Kamrup Division’s forest officials did not respond after they rescued the pythons to release them in the jungle areas.
Boro said that the forest officials responded earlier when the former West Kamrup DFO Dimpy Borah was informed, but now no one responded to the villagers. Recalling old incidents, he said that three years ago one python sadly died when they carried it to the forest office for handover.
Today also, the Village Headman himself carried the python on his motorcycle and handed it over to the nearby Singra Beat office under West Kamrup Division. Boro emphasized, “This is not the first time I myself have handed over rare pythons to the forest office. However, this is the responsibility of the forest department to rescue and release them safely.” Boro said that this year they rescued two pythons.
“While we tried to inform the forest department, no one responded and they showed an evasive mentality,” alleged Boro.
Locals regretted and alleged that even though the West Kamrup Division has six range offices and many beat offices, the forest department in the Boko area did not respond to these kinds of issues.
Locals sought justice from the Assam Forest Minister and Guardian Minister of the area Chandra Mohan Patowary. Meanwhile, regarding this matter, attempts to contact the West Kamrup DFO Subodh Talukdar were unsuccessful.
