Assam: Waris Punjab De Leader Returns to Dibrugarh Jail After Parole

After his parole was completed, Basant Singh, a prominent member of the pro-Khalistan organisation Waris Punjab De returned to Dibrugarh Central Jail in Assam on Monday.

DIBRUGARH: After his parole was completed, Basant Singh, a prominent member of the pro-Khalistan organisation Waris Punjab De and a close friend of its leader Amritpal Singh, returned to Dibrugarh Central Jail in Assam on Monday.

On December 9, Singh was temporarily allowed to leave the high-security prison to travel to Punjab to attend a family member's funeral. He was escorted back to Dibrugarh by Punjab Police following the completion of the funeral ceremonies.

Since March 19, 2023, Basant Singh has been detained at Dibrugarh Central Jail in accordance with the National Security Act (NSA).
According to prison rules, he was allowed parole after serving at least a year in custody. A prisoner may be given parole for a set amount of time in response to a variety of circumstances, including illness, a death in the family, marriage, property issues, or educational goals.

On March 19, 2023, Basant Singh was one of the first four members of the Waris Punjab De to be moved from Punjab to Dibrugarh Jail. Bhagwant Singh, Gurmeet Singh Bhukhanwala, and Daljeet Singh Kalsi were the other three members of this group.

Following this, six other people were taken to Dibrugarh Jail: Amritpal Singh, the leader of the Waris Punjab De; Papalpreet Singh; Kulwant Singh Dhaliwal; Varinder Singh Johal; Harjit Singh; and Gurinder Singh Aujla.
