Dibrugarh: Basant Singh, a prominent member of Waris Punjab De and a close aide of its chief Amritpal Singh, was brought back to Dibrugarh Central Jail on Monday after completing his parole.
Singh was temporarily released from Dibrugarh Central Jail on December 9 to attend the final rites of a family member in Punjab. After performing the final rites, Punjab Police escorted him back to the high-security Central Jail in Dibrugarh. Basant Singh has been lodged in the Dibrugarh Central Jail since March 19, 2023 under the National Security Act (NSA). Since he has served a minimum of one year in the jail he was granted parole as per prison rules.
Parole is a temporary release of a prisoner for a short period of time. It’s usually granted for reasons such as sickness, death, marriage, property dispute or education.
Notably, Basant Singh was among the first batch of four Waris Punjab De pro-Khalistani members who were flown to the Dibrugarh jail from Punjab on March 19, 2023. The other three were Daljeet Singh Kalsi, Gurmeet Singh Bhukhanwala and Bhagwant Singh. Later, six more including Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh, Papalpreet Singh, Kulwant Singh Dhaliwal, Varinder Singh Johal, Harjit Singh and Gurinder Singh Aujla were brought to Dibrugarh jail.
