GAURISAGAR: The National Social Service (NSS) Unit of Swahid Moniram Dewan (SMD) College, Charing, organized a weeklong special camp from March 24 at Srimanta Sankardev LP School, Gajpuria Kakoti Village on the outskirts of Gaurisagar in Sivasagar District, which successfully concluded today. The camp was formally inaugurated by Rajib Dutta, senior journalist and secretary, Gaurisagar Press Club. Addressing the gathering, Dutta said that college is not only an institution of higher learning for the people of a region but also a pioneer of the overall development of the region. He also urged the students that the purpose of education should not be to obtain a university degree just in the name of acquiring knowledge. He even said that there is a lack of leadership and successors in our society and urged the students to be socially responsible and work for the betterment of themselves and the society.
The inaugural function was anchored by Jyotika Borthakur, librarian of the college, while Dr Bidyananda Borkakoti, principal of the college, explained the aims and objectives of the camp. The other dignitaries who attended the function were Anil Sarma, founder headmaster of Srimanta Sankardev LP School; Ratul Dutta, present headmaster of the school; Devajyoti Hazarika, NSS Programme Officer-cum-assistant professor of the college; senior professors Dr Ravi Kumar Jha and Dipak Kumar Borah; teachers of the college; students; and local people.
The seven-day camp included planting of coconut and lemon seedlings on the college campus, handicrafts (pillow cover making), bamboo and cane training, cleaning of the college premises, a drawing competition among students, preparation of vermicompost and an eye treatment camp among the villagers. In addition, various cultural activities were organized among the students.
