NAGAON: A sudden death of a wild elephant created sensation at the Kocharigaon crops field near the Kondoli Komarpura area under the Kathiatoli forest range in the district on Thursday morning here.
According to local sources, the elephant, which was relatively young, died last night.
Locals spotted the carcass of the wild elephant near a small water body in the village and immediately informed the local forest officials.
Following the news, officials from the Nagaon Forest Division as well as the Kathiatoli forest range office rushed to the spot and arranged for the post-mortem examination.
Forest officials reported that the elephant was seen alive and well by forest staff last night. The officials also mentioned that the sudden death of the wild jumbo appeared to be natural. However, the actual cause of death will only be known after the post-mortem examination.
Local sources suggested that the elephant might have died due to excessive eating and drinking contaminated water from the nearby water body. The death of the elephant has saddened the locals, who paid their last respects by offering Gamosa, flowers, and tulsi leaves, and lighting incense sticks. The elephant had been roaming alone in the area for several days.
