GUWAHATI: The crackdown on corruption in government offices by the Assam government continues, with the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption wing of Assam Police arresting Paresh Kumar Sahu, Assistant Registrar of Cooperative Societies in Darrang, for accepting a bribe. Sahu was caught red-handed receiving Rs 10,000 from a complainant in connection with the registration of a society.

Police confirmed that legal procedures are being followed after the officer's arrest.

Since taking office on May 10, 2021, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's government has launched a strong crackdown on corrupt officials, including police officers, many of whom are now behind bars on corruption charges.

Meanwhile, earlier this week, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday arrested two employees of the Income Tax department at Silchar for accepting a bribe. The duo was caught red-handed while accepting Rs 4,000, as part of the demanded bribe amount of Rs 10,000.

The CBI had registered a case on Friday (Nov 29) on the basis of a complaint against two employees of the IT department at Silchar in the Cachar district of Assam. The duo had demanded a bribe of Rs 10,000 for the closure/surrender of a PAN number, which was one of two PAN cards issued in the name of the complainant's aunt.

She had already applied for the same at the IT department in Silchar. It was alleged that the complainant was later directed to pay a part amount of Rs 4,000.
