DHUBRI: Chalakura Part-IV, under the Chalakura village panchayat in Assam's Dhubri district, is facing a severe agricultural crisis as more than 1,000 bighas of fertile farmland have been rendered barren by heavy sand deposits from this year’s devastating floods. The calamity has shattered the livelihoods of the local farming community, pushing them into economic despair.
Once a thriving agricultural hub, Chalakura Char was known for its rich harvests of paddy, jute, onions, and vegetables, providing both food security and financial stability to the region. However, the floodwaters have drastically altered the terrain, leaving thick layers of sand that have rendered the land infertile.
This environmental disaster has forced over 200 farming families to abandon their fields, stripping them of their primary source of income. Many have migrated to nearby areas in search of daily wage labor to support their families, further worsening the crisis.
Adding to the community's struggles is the absence of any significant response from the Dhubri district agriculture department. No officials have visited the affected areas to assess the damage or provide relief, leaving farmers feeling abandoned and helpless.
Local residents have expressed frustration over the lack of action. The affected community is urging the Assam government to provide immediate financial relief and take concrete steps to rehabilitate the damaged land, ensuring the survival of the farming community and preventing further displacement.
