DIPHU: Chief Executive Member (CEM) of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) Tuliram Ronghang on Monday assured that land pattas, along with street lights and others, will be provided free of cost to the villagers of Sarpo Teron and Sarthe Engti.
This significant announcement was made while speaking during the observation of the 20th annual memorial for those killed during the Karbi-Kuki clash on March 24, 2004, at Memorial Park, Sarpo Teron village, Langvoku.
The victims of that horrific massacre was remembered by Sarpo Teron in Langvoku, about 25 km from the district headquarters town of Diphu. In the year 2003-2004, clashes erupted between the two communities in Karbi Anglong, and 19 villagers, including the son of the village headman, were allegedly shot by Kuki militants in one incident.
The gathering offered prayers and flowers at the memorial column in memory of the departed souls on this special day. Additionally, the CEM assured that the six families who did not receive ex-gratia from the government for the loss of their family members would receive it within a month, as stated in the memorandum submitted by the villagers.
Additionally, the CEM declared that the 19 villagers who were killed by the militants will be honored as Karbi heroes (nokbe) and their statues will be erected in a children's park that will be constructed soon.
