NAZIRA: With the upcoming Assembly Elections drawing closer, political activity in the Sivasagar constituency has intensified.

Amid this heightened political atmosphere, the candidate of Asom Gana Parishad, Prodip Hazarika, is reportedly receiving encouraging support from conscious voters, according to party leaders and workers. At a time when political rivals like Akhil Gogoi and Kushal Dowari have been engaged in sharp verbal exchanges, Hazarika has stood out by avoiding personal attacks. Instead, he has been delivering composed, logical, and issue-based speeches, which have resonated well with the electorate.

Hazarika addressed several election meetings across villages under the Hahchara and Cherekapar panchayats, where his speeches reportedly drew significant attention from voters. The newly restructured Sivasagar constituency includes 13 panchayats from the former Amguri constituency, along with 13 panchayats and Sivasagar town from the earlier Sivasagar constituency. Notably, except for the elections held in 1985 and 2011, AGP had often contested in alliance with other parties and did not field its own candidates in this region, leading to a period of inactivity among party workers. However, with the party fielding its own candidate this time, a renewed sense of enthusiasm has emerged among long-time members.

Meanwhile, dissatisfaction has surfaced among grassroots AGP workers after the Bharatiya Janata Party re-nominated Kushal Dowari despite earlier alliance expectations. Raising concerns over self-respect, many AGP workers have taken this election as a challenge and have actively joined the campaign in support of Hazarika.

Several senior party leaders, including former minister Hiranya Konwar and central leader Tulsi Gogoi, have participated in campaign rallies. During the campaign, Hazarika also inaugurated an election office at Haripara Tiniali in Hahchara. A significant number of youths from the Cherekapar panchayat have joined the AGP, further strengthening the party’s grassroots presence ahead of the election.
