SIVASAGAR: The recent ban on beef sales have caused an acute financial crisis for cattle herders in the Upper Assam districts of Sivasagar, Dibrugarh, Charaideo, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, and Tinisukia.
The ban has had a detrimental impact on the local cattle markets, especially in the historic Rajmai cattle market located in Sivasagar.
The Rajmai market, which was once a bustling hub for cattle herders in the region, has seen a sharp drop in buyers, as a result of which, herders are left with unsold livestock.
Many are of the view that this ongoing crisis has been sparked by a recent controversial statement made by Congress MP Rokibul Hussain. They believe that the Dhubri MP's contentious comments has led to a widespread boycott of beef in the area.
Not only has the ban endangered the livelihoods of cattle herders, it has also disrupted the local economy. It is worth mentioning that the sale of cattle was the primary source of income for herders who are left in an uncertain financial situation due to a sudden decline in demand.
The beef sale ban has also divided the political community, with some backing the move while others demanding for its reversal.
Distressed herders are appealing to the authorities to take immediate action to address their plight and put an end to their suffering inflicted by the ban.
