NAGAON: The closing ceremony of the birth centenary celebration of Sahityacharya Mahim Bora was held at Nowgong College (Autonomous) on Sunday. The programme was organized by the Nagaon Zilla Xahitya Xabha in collaboration with the Assamese department of Nowgong College and Nagaon Sankardev Sahitya Chora.
The programme began with the lighting of lamps at the statue of Mahim Bora located in the college campus. Dr Dhrubajyoti Baruah, in-charge Principal of the college, delivered the welcome address. Professor Dipak Kumar Bora, former Head of the Assamese department, delivered the keynote speech. He spoke about Mahim Bora’s life and literary contributions, saying, “Mahim Bora is not just a name, but an emotional entity.”
Dhanada Devi, Head of the Assamese department, spoke on the theme of ‘Nature helps humans, and humans help nature’ as reflected in Mahim Bora’s writings.
The programme also included recitations of Mahim Bora’s poems by Professor Dr Achyut Kumar Saikia and Mahim Bora’s granddaughter, Shreya Bora. Priyanku Sarma, Assistant Secretary of Nagaon Zilla Xahitya Xabha, recited a self-composed poem in tribute to Mahim Bora.
Other dignitaries present at the programme included Dr Tosheswar Nath, a geographer, faculty member Uma Ram Das, and Navanita Bora, representing Mahim Bora’s family. The programme was attended by students and faculty members of Nowgong College, as well as students from Pioneer Arts College, Nagaon.
