GUWAHATI: The body of Assam Police constable Champak Deka, who went missing after allegedly jumping into the Brahmaputra River from the Saraighat Bridge earlier this week, was recovered from Fakirganj in Dhubri district on Thursday.
Deka, a resident of Baihata Chariali, served with the 17th Assam Police Battalion and was deployed on security duty at the Assam BJP state headquarters in Guwahati.
He was reported missing on August 3 after his motorcycle was found abandoned on the new Saraighat Bridge. Police also recovered his personal documents from the spot, leading investigators to suspect that he had entered the river.
Following the incident, teams from the River Police and the State Disaster Response Force conducted an extensive search operation in the Brahmaputra. Despite two days of searches, rescuers were initially unable to trace him.
Officials confirmed on Thursday that Deka's body was recovered from Fakirganj in Dhubri district, several kilometres downstream.
Police have completed the necessary legal formalities and are continuing the investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. The exact cause of death has not yet been officially established.
