JAMUGURIHAT: Acting on an input from Biswanath SSP Ashif Ahmed, a team of Sootea Police conducted a naka check in front of Sootea Police Station under the guidance of officer-in-charge Pranjal Kumar Nath on Sunday afternoon and seized 98 cattle from nine vehicles travelling towards Tezpur from Biswanath Chariali.
According to the officer-in-charge, police stopped the cattle-laden vehicles and conducted searches. During the operation, the team found cattle inside the vehicles and seized both the animals and the vehicles. The drivers and handymen were also apprehended.
Police interrogation is underway to gather further information, the OC said.
On receiving news of the seizure, Naduar MLA Padma Hazarika reached the spot and praised the initiative taken by Sootea Police. He also urged the police administration to remain vigilant and ensure the safety of cattle belonging to poor farmers in the area.
The increasing incidents of cattle theft and alleged cattle smuggling have become a matter of concern for local residents.
