GUWAHATI: Dilip Saikia, the Member of Parliament from the Darrang-Udalguri constituency and President of the Assam Pradesh BJP, has raised strong objections against China’s plans to build the world’s largest dam on the Brahmaputra River in Tibet.
In Parliament today, Saikia expressed his concerns, warning that the construction of this dam could have severe consequences for the climate of Assam and the entire Northeast, threatening the region's environment, culture, and way of life.
Saikia explained that the Brahmaputra River originates in Tibet, passes through China, Arunachal Pradesh, and Assam, before flowing into Bangladesh. In China, it is known as the Yarlung Tsangpo.
The dam is planned for construction in a seismic zone near the Arunachal Pradesh border, which increases the risk of environmental disasters, such as earthquakes and floods. This region is already prone to such natural calamities, and the dam would add immense pressure to the ecosystem.
The MP highlighted that the project, once completed, will be the largest river dam globally, with the potential to generate over 300 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually.
With an investment of $137 billion, China would have significant control over the river’s flow, which could lead to either water shortages or catastrophic floods in Northeast India.
Saikia urged the Indian government to take immediate diplomatic action and engage in discussions with China to prevent the dam's construction, ensuring the safety and well-being of Assam and the Northeast.
