DIBRUGARH: In a significant push towards strengthening medical education and healthcare infrastructure in Upper Assam, Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday laid the foundation stones for a series of major infrastructure projects at Assam Medical College & Hospital (AMCH), Dibrugarh.
The ceremony marked the beginning of construction for teachers’ quarters and students’ hostels within the 504-bigha campus of AMCH. The Rs 357 crore-project is being implemented by the Public Works (Health & Education) Department.
As part of the project, accommodation facilities for faculty members will include two blocks for senior faculty with 40 flats and three blocks for junior faculty with 60 flats, along with separate residences for the Principal, Vice-Principals, and the Medical Superintendent.
To address the residential needs of students, a 500-seat girls’ hostel and a 225-seat boys’ hostel will be constructed for MBBS students. Additionally, hostels for postgraduate students will include a 232-seat capacity block for female students and a 200-seat block for male students. The plan also features a 250-capacity girls’ hostel for General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) students.
Staff accommodation will be enhanced with the construction of six blocks providing 120 flats for Grade III employees and nursing staff, and eight blocks offering 192 flats for Grade IV staff. The infrastructure project also includes essential supporting facilities such as a dining block and a community hall, designed to improve the overall quality of life on campus.
This ambitious development initiative is expected to transform the residential and academic environment at AMCH, enabling it to better serve its students, faculty, and healthcare professionals, while reinforcing its status as a premier medical institution in Northeast India.
Earlier, Himanta Biswa Sarma laid the foundation stones for several transformative infrastructure projects at Dibrugarh University, marking a major step in the institution’s academic and infrastructural advancement. The ceremony was held within the university campus.
The ambitious initiative, aimed at boosting academic, research, and residential infrastructure, is being carried out under two major schemes, the Chief Minister’s Special Grant and the Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (PM-USHA), with a total investment of Rs 147 crore.
“This is a historic day for the people of Dibrugarh.
