DONGKAMUKAM: Activists of the Indian National Congress (INC) organized a mass Tiranga Yatra on Friday to mark the 79th Independence Day of India and as part of a nationwide protest.

The rally began from the district head office at Dongkamukam and proceeded towards Kheroni Road, with participants carrying placards and chanting slogans. The procession later returned via Hospital Road to the district office.

Prominent leaders who participated included Augustine Enghee, President of INC, WKADC, along with former Executive Members (EM) Sing Teron and Ashok Teron, as well as several Mandal leaders and supporters.

Speaking to the media, Ashok Teron, former EM of KAAC, strongly criticized the BJP, alleging that the party came to power through illegal means. He further accused the present State Government and the Council of being a complete failure.

He said that instead of safeguarding Assam’s borders from aggression by neighboring states, the government was “selling land piece by piece to multinational companies.”

Teron warned that if such practices continued, future generations of Karbis and other tribal communities would become landless. He demanded that land documents (pattas) be granted to indigenous communities who have been residing in the Hills Districts since 1947.
