MANGALDAI: Tensions within the Congress party in Dalgaon LAC in Darrang district, escalated dramatically on Friday when senior Congress workers allegedly assaulted a female councillor from their own party. The incident stemmed from a contentious meeting to elect the chairman of the Besimari Anchalik Panchayat.
The meeting saw 14 members in attendance: 11 from Congress, one from BJP, and two independents. Two Congress members, Suleman Ali and Hamidur Rahman, competed for the chairman’s post. A 7-7 tie in the vote led to Hamidur Rahman being declared the winner via a coin toss.
Infuriated by Suleman Ali’s defeat, Besimari Zila Parishad member Mahibuddin Ahmed, former Zila Parishad member Ainul Haque, and other Congress leaders suspected cross-voting. They allegedly targeted 1, 2 Baruajhar Anchalik Panchayat Member Jasmine Begum and her husband Abdul Hakim, accusing them of betrayal. The couple was forcibly taken to Mahibuddin Ahmed’s residence, where they were reportedly assaulted.
Dalgaon Police intervened, rescuing the injured couple and taking them to a hospital for treatment. After recording their statements, a case was filed at Dalgaon Police Station against Mahibuddin Ahmed, Ainul Haque, and other involved Congress members. The police are investigating, and the incident has sparked outrage in the area, with authorities probing the assault on an elected representative.
