DHUBRI: Congress, one short of majority in Dhubri Zila Parishad, is in deep concern. In the 20-member body, Congress needs the support of either Raijor Dal or an independent candidate.
On the scheduled day for the formation of Dhubri Zilla Parishad on August 5, proceedings had to be postponed due to the miraculous absence of the rest of the 10 members from the meeting.
The first meeting for the formation of the Dhubri Zilla Parishad was to be held in the meeting hall of the Dhubri Zilla Parishad office at 10 AM, as per the instructions of Dhubri Deputy Commissioner Dibakar Nath. As per the instructions, the agenda of the first meeting included the swearing-in ceremony of the newly-elected members of the Zilla Parishad and the election of the President and Vice-President of the Zilla Parishad.
However, in the meeting, only the 10 Congress members were present out of the total 20 of the Dhubri Zilla Parishad. The remaining members, 3 from AIUDF, 5 from BJP, 1 independent member, and 1 member from Raijor Dal, were absent from the meeting. After waiting for a long time due to the absence of the remaining 10 members, Dhubri Zilla Parishad’s Chief Executive Officer Gokul Brahma announced the postponement of the meeting.
It is to be noted that this time, the posts of President and Vice-President of the Dhubri Zilla Parishad have been reserved for women. Also noteworthy is that after the recent constituency delimitation and subsequent panchayat election, no single party was able to secure an absolute majority in the 20-member Dhubri Zilla Parishad.
In a media briefing, Congress Legislator from South Samara, Wazed Ali Choudhury, who was leading the members, informed that the line member of Raijor Dal had supported Congress in formation, but that member didn’t turn up in the meeting.
“All the 10 members of Congress are united and confident to form Dhubri Zilla Parishad body, whenever the next meeting for formation of the body takes place,” Choudhury said confidently.
In the Dhubri Zilla Parishad poll, BJP made a surprising surge by winning five Zilla Parishad member seats in a significant improvement compared to the previous term.
