DIBRUGARH: In commemoration of the death anniversary of Sahityarathi Lakshminath Bezbaroa, the Lakshminath Bezbaroa Chair of the Department of Assamese, Dibrugarh University, organized a special lecture event on Monday. The event began with a welcome address by Bezbaroa Chair Professor Dr Nirajana Mahanta Bezbora and was formally inaugurated by the Vice-Chancellor of Dibrugarh University Prof Jiten Hazarika, in the presence of Dean of Humanities and Law Dr Jayanta Kumar Borah, several professors, academicians, and faculty members of Dibrugarh University and neighbouring colleges, as well as students and scholars.
On this occasion, anchored by Silmil Sopun Hazarika, Professor Arupjyoti Saikia from the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati, delivered a lecture on the topic ‘Bezbaroa, Jardine, Skinner & Company and the Commercial World of Colonial Eastern India.’
Professor Saikia explored how Bezbaroa became involved with ‘Jardine, Skinner & Company’ and began his multifaceted business career. He examined the intimate interconnections between the politics of power and capital, shaped by the intersecting issues of caste, class, race, and other socio-political factors in colonial India. Emphasizing Bezbaroa’s significance, he remarked, “Any discussion of colonial India is quite incomplete without mentioning Lakshminath Bezbaroa.”
The lecture ended with an engaging interactive session between the speaker, academicians, and scholars.
