ORANG: In a dignified literary event held at the Axam Xahitya Xabha’s (AXX) Guwahati office on August 2, the second volume of the acclaimed novel ‘Orangor Ring’ by noted writer Dr Haricharan Das was officially released. The book was unveiled by the General Secretary of AXX, Debojit Bora.
Addressing the gathering, Bora remarked that this novel, rich in heritage and cultural essence, beautifully captures the unique history, ecology, and social fabric of the Orang region. The newly-released volume is an expanded continuation of ‘Orangor Ring Shuni,’ originally published in 1999, and offers a deeper exploration into the legacy and struggles of the local communities.
A significant highlight of the novel is its documentation of the prolonged movement led by the Forest Protection Committee to safeguard the Orang Wildlife Sanctuary. The narrative intertwines both environmental and socio-political themes, presenting a compelling chronicle of activism and resilience.
The book features a foreword by renowned author Nirupama Borgohain and is dedicated to the tireless volunteers of the Aranya Suraksha Samiti, Assam, whose efforts toward forest conservation have been exemplary.
The release ceremony witnessed the presence of several distinguished personalities including Hans Das, Executive President of the AXX’s Ethnic History Project Committee, Vice-President Dandirama Bora, Convenor Hedombo Kalita, Prof Chandra Kamal Chetia of Mahapurusha Srimanta Sankaradeva University, and eminent folklore researcher Hemanta Kumar Saikia, among others.
