GUWAHATI: Rupjyoti Kurmi, the Congress turncoat who recently joined the ruling BJP, claimed that incumbent Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will continue as the Chief Minister for at least 20 years.

Kurmi resigned from the state assembly and the Congress party after he won the election for the consecutive fourth term from the Mariyani constituency, Jorhat.

A vocal leader Kurmi arrived at the assembly today despite the fact that he is not a member of the House. Speaking to media later he welcomed the works done and different steps were taken by the Sarma-led government during its first two months.

"I am sure that no party could defeat the BJP in the next several elections. Himanta Biswa would be the state Chief Minister for at least 20 years," he said.

The former MLA also lashed out at the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president, Ripun Bora saying that the latter was not fit for leading a party. "I won from a Congress ticket unlike Ripun Bora, he mocked the APCC president.

Earlier, signaling one more defection in the Opposition Congress party the team Rupjyoti or the Mariani Congress workers who are close to former MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi, the Congress turncoat who recently defected the party to the BJP, is learned to join the saffron party on July 5 or 6.

According to sources, Kurmi, who was elected to the Assam assembly for the fourth consecutive term from the Mariani Constituency, has persuaded almost 90 percent of Congress workers of his Constituency to join the saffron party. If information from his close circuit is to be believed, then the Mariani Constituency, a stronghold of the Congress, is likely to turn into the BJP's base.

It is likely that the Constituency may become Congress-free echoing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's all-pervading the Congress Mukta Bharat slogan.
