TINSUKIA: More than hundred tea workers and the Tinsukia district committee of Assam Tea Tribes Students’ Association (ATTSA) blocked the NH 37 at Doomdooma on Thursday demanding arrest of the garden manager after a factory worker sustained fatal injury on Tuesday. The worker, who is in a critical state, is currently undergoing treatment at AMC&H Dibrugarh. The incident took place at Namdang TE owned by MK Shah Export Limited.
According to ATTSA leaders, Shambhu Tanti (48), the factory worker, was forced to work by the management on March 7 despite being a government holiday for Holi, in gross violation of the Factory Act 1948 and Plantation Labour Act 1951. The incident happened due to negligence of the management, the ATTSA alleged.
In a memorandum to the Chief Minister Assam, the ATTSA demanded better healthcare and suitable compensation to Shambhu Tanti. They also demanded stern action against the Factory Inspector and Garden Inspector for recurrence of such accidents and their alleged negligence.
