Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis took to the campaign trail in Assam on Tuesday, addressing rallies in both Dibrugarh and Jorhat as the BJP intensifies its push in the final stretch of the Assam Assembly Election 2026.

At a large rally in Dibrugarh, Fadnavis threw his full support behind sitting BJP MLA and Assam Power Minister Prasanta Phukan, calling on voters to return him to the assembly with a massive mandate.

"Prasanta Phukan has been a pillar of strength for this constituency. To ensure that the pace of development in Dibrugarh does not slow down, it is essential to vote for the lotus symbol again. This time, he should win by one lakh votes," Fadnavis said.

Championing the BJP's "double-engine" government concept, he credited Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma's administration for Assam's development pace — particularly praising the government's stance on infiltration and its efforts to protect land rights of indigenous communities.

Fadnavis specifically cited Dibrugarh's growing regional importance as evidence of the BJP's commitment to the area. "The decision to make Dibrugarh the second capital of Assam, the construction of the Assembly complex here, and the establishment of a High Court bench are testaments to this government's dedication to the region," he said.

Addressing a campaign meeting for the BJP candidate in Jorhat LAC, Fadnavis turned his attention to Congress's Gaurav Gogoi — the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president and Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha — who is contesting against BJP's Hitendra Nath Goswami.

Fadnavis alleged that Gogoi had rarely visited Jorhat or engaged with his constituents after being elected as the Jorhat Lok Sabha MP two years ago, suggesting he was better suited to Parliament than to state assembly politics.

Taking a broader swipe at the Congress party, Fadnavis accused it of keeping Assam and the Northeast in a state of unrest and neglect despite decades in power after independence.

He contrasted that record with what he described as the BJP's dual commitment to growth and cultural preservation under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership.

"The country, including Assam, has not only seen growth and progress in leaps and bounds under the able stewardship of Modi and other BJP leaders, but they have also ensured that the culture and heritage of the people do not get lost in the vortex of progress and growth," he said.
