KOKRAJHAR: Tension erupted in Kokrajhar after students of Neevadita Academy, operating under AISECT of the National Skill Development Corporation and powered by Rabindranath Tagore University, staged a protest and gheraoed the institute, alleging the issuance of fake nursing certificates.
The private nursing academy, run by Principal Prabir Ghosh on the top floor of Brahma Complex in the heart of Kokrajhar town, has come under fire after hospitals and private nursing homes reportedly rejected the certificates provided to its graduates.
Agitated nursing students told the media that although 60 students were declared passed in a re-examination this year, their certificates were not accepted anywhere for job applications. They further alleged that teachers at the academy charged Rs. 5,000 each from failed students to conduct the re-examination. According to them, as many as 60 students were deliberately failed with the intent of collecting money, only to be declared passed after re-examinations.
One of the academy’s teachers, Hema Basumatary, revealed that the institute lacked proper affiliation and that certificates were being fabricated by simply copy-pasting student details into old certificate formats on a computer. She also alleged that the principal arbitrarily increased student fees, and she appealed to students not to fall prey to such fraudulent institutions in the future. The controversy has sparked outrage among Kokrajhar citizens, who questioned the future of the affected students. Locals demanded a strict inquiry into the matter and urged the district administration to take immediate action against the academy’s management for jeopardizing students’ careers.
Upon receiving information about the protest, a police team rushed to the spot and detained Principal Prabir Ghosh, who was later taken to Kokrajhar Police Station for questioning.
