BOKAKHAT: Due to the massive rise in the water level of the Dhansiri river, vast areas of Khumtai Mouza, including villages such as Khumtai, Bogorioni, Leteku Chapori, Chungihola, Borbalitop, Butlikhua, Urangtoli, Moriya Bil Thengal, Kachupathar, Purani Komargaon, and Shalmora, have gone underwater. As a result, the homes and farmlands of over a hundred farmers have been submerged, and residents from these areas have taken shelter in temporary camps.
The roads connecting Khumtai Chariali to Bogorioni and the paved road from Leteku Chapori to the Numaligarh Oil Refinery are completely submerged, causing significant disruptions to transportation. Many social functions scheduled in the Khumtai region have also been washed out by the floodwaters.
Temporary flood relief camps have been set up at various educational institutions, including No. 1 Khumtai Model Primary School, Khumtai Higher Secondary School, Puranimati Primary School, Leteku Chapori Primary School, Dev Kumar Gogoi Middle English School, Chungihola Primary School, and No. 1 Butlikhua Primary School. Over a hundred people have taken refuge in these camps.
In the Bogorioni area, more than a hundred wild animals from a nearby sanctuary, displaced by the floods, were seen gathering in herds during daylight hours and spreading out across the Dabidubi area in search of higher ground. However, it was unclear what measures the forest department had taken to ensure the safety and security of these wild animals.
Local authorities, including the MLA of Khumtai constituency, the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Golaghat district, the Circle Officer of Khumtai Revenue Circle, and village heads visited the flood-affected areas to assess the damage and distribute relief materials. MLA Mrinal Saikia and former Minister and social worker Bismita Gogoi personally provided food supplies to the relief camps. Meanwhile, the district agriculture department started collecting data on the damage and losses faced by the flood-affected farmers.
