NEW DELHI: Union Minister and former Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal is a top contender for the BJP National President position. An official announcement is expected soon. With Jagat Prakash Nadda’s term ending, the BJP is preparing for a leadership change, especially after its recent big win in the Delhi elections.
If Sonowal is appointed, he will be the first BJP National President from the Northeast and the Scheduled Tribes (ST) community. Since the inception of the party, none of its eleven presidents have been from these groups, making his selection a historic moment in national politics.
Sarbananda Sonowal, who is the current Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, is now a strong candidate for the BJP party president. Sonowal, the first Chief Minister of Assam elected from the BJP, has risen to prominence due to good governance, especially through developmental activities that have greatly enhanced infrastructure as well as security within the state. His skilled handling of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC) has seen him receive plaudits from party leadership and RSS functionaries alike.
Jagat Prakash Nadda who has been the national president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) since January 2020, after replacing Amit Shah in this key position is completing his tenure. Nadda, with his rich experience in politics and long-standing relationship with the BJP, has been a key figure in election campaign strategy and party organization.
