NAGAON: Kirti Kamal Bora, a former student leader was shot at by Anti Narcotics Squad at Nagaon Kachalukhuwa Tiniali on Saturday evening. Sources claimed that he was shot at on suspicion of being a drug peddler. The injured student leader was immediately admitted to Nagaon BP Civil Hospital after which he was referred to Guwahati Medical College Hospital.
Significantly, the bullet was removed from his leg by the doctors and another surgery is yet to be carried out. Sources claimed that a team from Anti Narcotics Squad on Saturday evening launched a search operation against drug peddlers at Kachalukhuwa Tiniali. During the operation, the police personnel picked up one youth and beat him on the road itself. At that time, the former AASU activist Kirti Kamal Bora accidentally arrived at the spot and quizzed about the reason for thrashing the youth. Being angry at his question, one ASI of the team shot at one of Kirti's legs, sources said.
Meanwhile, following the bullet attack on the student leader, a sensation prevailed in the town. The incident has drawn sharp reactions.
Opposing the police atrocities on the innocent people, a large number of students from various educational institutions led by Asom Chatra Parishad, Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad and other students' organizations went on a rampage and took out a protest rally against Nagaon police from Nowgong College (autonomous) police point to the local Nagaon Police Station.
The irate students gheraoed the police station for several hours and sought a high level probe into the incident. Meanwhile, SP Anand Mishra rushed to Nagaon Police Station and tried to control the situation.
District unit of Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad also submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister through Nagaon DC where Deepmoni Bora and Pragjyotish Bonia, the president and secretary of district unit of Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad respectively, demanded of the CM to take action against those police personnel who were with ASI Pradip Bonia on Saturday evening.
During the protest, the students' fraternity criticized the role of the Superintendent of Police and also shouted various slogans against Nagaon police. The protesters said that ASI Pradip Bonia allegedly fired at the student leader Kirti Kamal Bora and demanded his immediate arrest. The family members alleged that Kirti Kamal was the victim.
Special DGP GP Singh rushed to Nagaon on Sunday afternoon and reviewed the incident and also took stock from senior officials. Singh said, "Unlawful activities would not be tolerated. The adequate probe will be carried out and its report will be submitted within a week following which action will be taken."
