BOKAKHAT: The Numaligarh region under Bokakhat sub-division has been reeling under the devastating impact of the Dhansiri river’s flooding. The floodwaters submerged more than one and a half dozen villages across Numaligarh, Kamargaon, Mohura, and Kuruwabahi areas.
Almost all the schools in the affected region were underwater. Farmers' paddy fields and kitchen gardens have been completely destroyed. Large stretches of roads were also submerged. The floodwaters of the Dhansiri river reached the approach roads to the NH-37 overbridge near Kamargaon. In Paschim Dhodang, the flood broke through an agricultural embankment and has now completely submerged the area.
Farmlands, crops, and kitchen gardens of poor farmers were also underwater. There were fears that the situation could worsen. The catastrophic flood crushed the monsoon hopes of many farmers. As of Wednesday evening, the Dhansiri river at Numaligarh was flowing 1.97 meters above the danger level and became stagnant in some areas.
Most village roads in the flood-affected areas of Numaligarh were submerged. The fertile lands were buried in flood silt, causing great distress among the farming community. Simultaneously, the floodwaters of the Golabil river inundated several villages in the Mohuramukh area.
Additionally, the second wave of floods from the Brahmaputra, Dhansiri, and Gelabil rivers submerged many new areas in Mohura Mouza. As of this report, around 20 villages of various sizes in Mohura Mouza were under water.
Over a hundred farmers have lost their paddy fields, Rabi crops, homes, and agricultural land to the floodwaters. Key roads from Khumtai Chariali to Bagorioni and from Leteku Chapori to the Numaligarh Refinery were submerged, halting all transportation. This disruption severely impacted refinery workers who were unable to commute, creating growing concerns among the labour community. Currently, many flood-affected people have taken shelter at temporary relief camps established in schools such as 1 No. Khumtai Model Primary School, Khumtai Higher Secondary School, Puronimati Primary School, Leteku Chapori Primary School, Dev Kumar Gogoi Middle English School, Chungi Hola Primary School, and 1 No. Bootli Khua Primary School.
In the Bagorioni region, over a hundred wild animals were seen moving from nearby wildlife sanctuaries to higher ground in areas like Dabidubi during the daytime to escape the floods.
In the Kamargaon area under Bokakhat constituency, the sudden flash floods caused significant damage to the local population. Villages like New Sonowal Gaon and Tarun Nagar were badly affected, with residents taking shelter on higher grounds and in school buildings.
Although the Bokakhat Subdivisional Administration claimed to have taken all necessary steps, local residents alleged that the flood relief measures were inadequate.
