GUWAHATI: Amidst ongoing demonstration calling for justice for the death of Congress worker Mridul Islam during the Raj Bhavan protest, Guwahati police detained Bhupen Borah, the president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, on Friday, December 20, near Hatigaon point.

Along with other senior party leaders, Congress leaders Ripun Bora, Uday Bhanu Chib, and senior spokesperson Ratul Kalita were also taken into custody. At the moment, they have been detained at the 10th APBn in Kahilipara, Guwahati.

It should be noted that Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma declared a police investigation into the death of Congress activist Mridul Islam during the Raj Bhavan demonstration on December 18.

Both the Assam Secretariat and the Congress headquarters in the Rajdhani Masjid area of Guwahati, where a significant number of Congress employees had gathered to continue their ongoing protest, saw the deployment of heavy police earlier today.

A brief altercation ensued as demonstrators disregarded police barricades and proceeded with their march.

Following the disruptions brought on by the Raj Bhavan Cholo protest by the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee on December 18, the Guwahati police filed a suo-moto complaint.

A clash between protesters and police took place due to the demonstration, which focused on topics including smart meters, the Adani scandal, and the circumstances in Manipur.

On Thursday, hundreds of people from all over Assam, including friends, family, and coworkers, joined APCC President Bhupen Bora and other Congress MLAs for the Namaj E Janaja of the late Advocate Mridul Islam in Kismat Kathmi village, which is under Boko LAC. He was the secretary of the APCC's legal cell.
