TINSUKIA: The International Human Rights Council (IHRC), Tinsukia District Committee strongly expressed its deep dissatisfaction over the Assam Government's decision to issue arms licences to residents of border areas of Assam. The committee questioned the basis on which the government decided to grant such licences.

District Secretary L Ratan Singh stated that by issuing arms licences in this manner, the government is creating a threat to human life. Being a democratically elected government, it is the moral duty and responsibility of the Assam Government to ensure the safety and security of every citizen's life and property. "Who will be held responsible if such life-threatening weapons are misused by any individual," IHRC questioned, even as the government has already set up foreigner tribunals to expel suspicious individuals.

If such steps were not enough to tackle the issue, the government instead can raise the strength of the police force, the IHRC observed, adding that if India could defeat Pakistan in just 2-3 days, then there could be no fear against a small neighbouring country like Bangladesh.
