SIVASAGAR: In a bid to address the various civic problems plaguing the historic town of Sivasagar, senior journalist and active social worker Pranjal Rajguru on Friday submitted a memorandum to the Executive Officer of the Sivasagar Municipal Board on behalf of the Indian Patriotic Federation-Socialist (IPFS) and the Nikhil Assam Samajwadi Janaganatantrik Ganaswaraj Party.
The memorandum highlighted the long-standing issues faced by residents and commuters in areas under Ward No. 7, particularly the busy stretch connecting Thakurbari Chariali (near Sharma Nursing Home) to the Sri Sri Ram Janaki Temple, Sri Sri Hanuman Temple, and Siva Doul. Due to the narrowness of the road, heavy traffic congestion and commuter inconvenience have become routine, despite the presence of several critical institutions in the vicinity. These include the Sivasagar Sadar police station, Thanamukh Primary School, Amolapatty Shantiban crematorium, etc. The area also witnesses the daily footfall of hundreds of devotees visiting the temples. Hence, the organizations urged the authorities to widen this road and install solar-powered street lights to ensure safe passage for both vehicles and pedestrians.
The memorandum also called for the scientific and permanent construction of the open roadside drains on both sides of this road. Additionally, to tackle the problem of artificial waterlogging in Ward No. 7, particularly in areas like Lakhmipriya Path, Telipatti, Srimanta Sankardev Nagar, Amolapatty Hemchandra Baruah Udyan, and the central market vicinity, the IPFS has demanded that all existing drains be properly desilted, widened, and rebuilt with concrete restoration following engineering standards. Receiving the memorandum, Executive Officer Debabrata Sharma assured that the concerns raised would be addressed promptly. He also informed that the Sivasagar Municipal Board was planning to implement a new drainage project within July to mitigate the artificial flooding problem in Ward No. 7.
